Advocates for better services for people with mental health issues are supportive of a small group of people who have been protesting outside the Waterford Hospital for the past couple of weeks.
John Abbott, the CEO of the Canadian Mental Health Association NL branch, says the replacement Waterford is not, unto itself, the answer. Abbott is calling for more frontline services including supports for community treatment teams.
They are supporting of the replacement hospital being built, but Abbott notes it will be a couple of years before it opens.
The association wants to see more crisis beds in the community so that when a person reaches the crisis stage, they don’t have to go to the emergency room.
